We have the luck to test the huge DLC for Destiny calling The Taken King for you. We spend so many time to play the main game and to achieve all the good stuff that we are asking ourselves, if it is worth to get this DLC and start to play the game again. Let’s find out. Before we start this review we want to clear that this DLC adds more content to the main game but it is not a standalone game. That means that players that only have the main game get in contact with other player that also do not have more missions to play because of the last two DLCs, but they also met players that have because of The Taken King a lot of new/more equipment and can achieve a higher level. Unfortunately, that also means that they have a lot more limitations as players that have the last two and the new DLC. In addition to that, they also can not play missions with a higher difficulty level.

The biggest questions is to find out if something changes with The Taken King. It is one year ago that Bungie released the main game Destiny. After this, millions of player searched for materials and other great loot. Bungie announced that with this DLC the second year of the Destiny franchise starts. They also promised that The Taken King is so big that it’s worth to pay nearly a price of a full game. Let’s see what’s really inside.

First we want to say that we like that Bungie adds new stuff into the action of million warriors and their fight against extraterrestrial forces. We do not want to spoiler too much about the story, but real fans have seen because of the trailer that you now fight against Crota’s father Oryx. To get into the battle against him you have to travel into the near of the Saturn and the mars’ moon Phobos. We noticed that a lot of known places have get a new touch.

The Taken King aroused our curiosity to explore the new environments. We love the overwhelm look of all the scenes. We also like to see the light effects which falls on the high blankets of the ghost ship. We think that Destiny’s levels and their design are one of the best for this generation of consoles.

We noticed that Bungie staged the battle for our solar system more exciting than before. We love that they add more interesting characters into the great and impressive cutscenes. Finally, they interact together and are because of that more interesting than the speaker in the behind. We also like that they talk more while you are in a mission. We love that we get finally the feeling of being a part of a living world. We like that our mechanical companion also known as Ghost, who following us constantly can finally show us informations about selected objects. That gives players the choice to get interesting background information about Destiny’s universe. This feature evaluates the game’s world and we like it.

Thank you very much Bungie that you moved a step further with the design of the missions. Players not only meet different known opponent but also the tasks are much more varied. We love that Bungie breaked out of their routine. We have not played any mission like the missions in the DLC in this franchise before. In addition to that, because of adding more great loot and currency in the new missions, Bungie also added some sidequests that increases the variety. It was really exciting. You can play all missions alone or with up to three players. Only two of them are made for up to six guardians because they are really ambitious. You not only have to achieve missions. Players are now working its way through a list of challenges that require killing surprisingly strong enemies or using prescribed weapons against certain opponents.

Before you can enter the called King’s fall you have to achieve a light level of 240. Bungie even recommends one of 290. You know that we are not a fan of spoilers and we like that Bungie did not announced more about the raid before. They only announced that the guardians will go through a twist in the story. Exciting!

Bungie added in this game that the light level now shows the strength of the guardian is now more relevant than the character’s level. Missions with higher levels of difficulty are only to those players available whose character has reached a certain light level. We like that it is now possible to merge valuable items to improve them. This increases the relationship to weapons that players like to use more than once.

Bungie also cancelled one of the known currencies that you used to get new gears. We also like that you now can buy exsotic items that you have throug away. That is very useful, because some of the rare weapons and armours have been revalued in The Taken King.

New is the third focus which finally allows a kind of third specialization. For example, you can add to the Warlock the emperor which sets all in front of him standing enemies under constant current. This gives the character the possibility for a close combat attack which also looks great. The Titan get a big hammer and the Hunter can now rob the special abilities of several enemies and slow them down.

Unfortunately, we have to say that we still miss stronger specialization of the guardian’s classes. We also would prefer if the exotic loot would be stuff that you get randomly than only once. Great is that we finally get a feeling of being a part of a huge living world/space. This is possible because of the great story. It contains surprising events and gives finally the story more depth and believable characters. We love that Bungie designed the way to the strong enemies more clear and varied. We like that because of the new light level the player’s progress is more clearly to see. We also like that Bungie add great loot and more interesting enemies. This helps that the game get not boring. We also hope that we will see more interesting missions in the near feature. We definitely can say that Bungie keeps what they promised. If you take a look at jadoRendr’s Destiny review you can see that it is a solid game, but with the Taken King they are on the right way to transform the the Destiny franchise into a real good thing. We can say that The Taken King is a must have for all players who have remained faithful to Destiny.
