Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus Review

From time to time it happens: We can get our hands on a pure single-player shooter. This kind of shooters do not need a multiplayer and the developers can use their time to focus their work on the campaign. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is one of them. This game is not only fully packet with shooting battles, it also tells us an emotional story. This story is mixed with depressing moments, crazy ideas, intimate scenes and great gags. We can say, that the developer Machine Games has not only made a fantastic continuation. We think, that this is one of the best single-player shooters since years.

.

.

We can confirm, that the plot is the highlight of the game, even if we had much fun to fight our way through the game most of the time. Wolfenstein 2 tells the story about an alternate 1961.  In this timeline you will see, that Nazis won the WW2 and conquer most of the world. You are playing B.J. Blazkowicz who wants to start a rebellion in the conquered USA. We recommend to play Wolfenstein: The New Order before you start with The New Colossus. The story of part two start at the point The new Order ends.

.

What we love are the stories lang and well made sequences and dialogues. We noticed very quickly, that the developers been listened to the community. They renounced on some things we criticize in the first game. Instead of that they add a few great crazy things. We can confirm that the developers even added more craziness into the second game, but that is what we love about Wolfenstein. This is not a game that will teach us something. It will catch us emotionally.

.

Wolfenstein 2 also includes some quiet and sensible moments which are often packed with emotions, but never loses their impact. We quickly fled in love with the figures and we also have the chance to see the B.J. big heart. What we also like is the humor in this game. You can explore between the missions the “Hammerfaust”, which is a by the rebellions hijacked huge submarine. This boat is now their headquarter. On this boat we get to know a few interesting characters that surprised us often with some funny performances. We do not want to say to much at the moment to not spoiler some great things you will see. What we can say is that we had a lot of fun. The only point here we could criticize is that we would like to have the opportunity to interact more with the characters. B.J. is more the silence observer who walks through the headquarter and starts dialogues by walking by and do not has any effects on them.

.

.

Instead of that we we love it that the developers added a special thing that celebrates his return in this game. At the beginning of the game you can choose between two timelines. You have to decide which of the two characters of the first game survives. One of the differences are the different weapons you get. You can get a cool laser-weapon or a grenade-launcher. The choose you made also has a effect on the sequences, dialogues and even on some side-quests. This is a great reason to play the game more than one time.

.

In the time you do not follow the story you can explore linear and varied levels. In this game you can also see the nuclear contaminated Manhattan. In addition you also will see New Orleans, bizarre and by Nazis modified Roswell and also enter different bunkers, weapon-arsenals and other different facilities that are built under the ground. The levels are full packed with details. There are tons of propaganda posters, billboards, handwritten notes, postcards and a lot more things to find that fill the universe of Wolfenstein with live. We recommend to you to sneak up more than once to the enemies and listening to their conversations. Their dialogues pushes the game’s atmosphere.

.

You mission-target is set by the game, but most of the time you can decide if you want to get into the fight with raw force  or if you want to sneak. The Stealth-Way works because of the great designed levels and the use of secret ways very well. But it is not easy anymore like in the previous game.

.

.

You have to go into the raw fight at the time you been spotted and the alarm starts. For this you can use a great weapon-arsenal. You can use ax for the close combat. In addition you can use all shooter-typical weapons like submachine guns, assault rifles, shotguns and a portable mini rocket launcher. In addition you can use heavy-weapons like a minigun or a laser-gun which are limited but very effective. The feeling of the weapons is great and very massive/powerful. We loved to fight the enemies. In addition to the great battles we can confirm that they are very bloody. B.J. moves are much faster than in the previous game. The controls are very exact. One point we have to criticize is the jumping. Unfortunately, the controls in DOOM are much better compared to Wolfenstein II.

.

We can confirm that Wolfenstein 2 is is more challenging on the normal difficulty-level than the previous game. Even on the second of seven difficulty-levels the enemies are more precise. On the much higher one, the enemies use more often granates, cover themselves much better and try to cover B.J. Yes, there been times we wanted to through the mouse into the next corner, but we love it that it is possible to change the difficulty-level in the main menu at any time. What we also love is, that you can save your game at any time. In the PC-Version you can also use the F5-Quicksave function.

.

Great is that you can use two weapons at the same time. What we also like is, that you can now use two different weapons at the same time. We wished, there would be a slow motion funktion in the time you choose the weapon like in DOOM. There is such a function in this game, but it is only available with a fightmod-improvement which is available nearly at the middle of the game

.

Fighting-mods including many of improvement. They support three ways of playing: sneaking, tactical gameplay and brute force. The Python-Gird for example helps B.J. to go through tight shafts so that you can sneak through a level without being seen. Let’s keep it short, there a few things you can use to improve your gameplay, but we wished there been more situations we have to use them. We think that players get this functions to late in the game. Like in the previous game you can collect points for headshots, by killing enemies silently, etc. This improves B.J.’s skills and works much better than in The New Order.

.

What we also like is the new weapon feature. You can find in the levels in addition to bonus stuff like Letters, gold bars and shrill germanized pieces of music now also for the first time relevant improvements for your weapons. This upgrades help B.J. to improve his weapons up to three times.

.

The function to jump into levels we have already played is also new and very useful for collectors. It is very hard to find all stuff at the first time you play a level. It is possible to use a map in the headquarter to jump in levels you already played to search for more loot and play some sidequests. In to most of this missions you just only have to kill a leader. What we love about this function is, that if you jump back into older missions, the look of that map changes. For example, if you play Roswell again after a while, you will play the level in the night and you have to fight some Ku-Klux-Klan-Members. If you just only play the main missions you will have a lot of fun with this game for 10 up to 12 hours. Players who will also play all sidequest will have fun for up to 20 hours.

.

The developers Machine Games uses from DOOM known id Tech 6 engine for the first time. Our opinion: With success. Wolfenstein 2 looks much more fantastic than the previous game. The lights, shadows, much more particles, great looking water and greater made levels with all the details are looking beautiful. But the look of the game is not perfect. We could see differences between the well made main characters of the game and the faces of characters that are only exist as long as we let them live. The PC-Version offers a lot of setting-possibilities. Even if you play the game with lower graphic-details we can confirm that Wolfenstein 2 looks and runs very good. What we also love is the game’s soundtrack. We think that it fits great into the game and supports the atmosphere.

.

Everybody who loves it to kill Nazis and does not like a great story which is packed with great characters, dialogues, drama and humor has buy the wrong game. Wolfenstein 2 is a bizarre, brutal, funny a at the same time touching trip which pushes his fantastic story and characters much more to the front than the previous game. It is an intensive experience, if you allow the game to touch you. The much more refined gameplay makes a huge jump forward and the mix of sneaking, tactical gameplay and brute force makes much more fun than in the previous game, vene if the difficulty-level is much higher. Even if we miss thinks like to interact more with other characters, more challenging boss-fights and more interesting side-quests, we can confirm that the developer Machine Games shows the industry how a great a sequel can be. This is a singleplayer-ego-shooter how it should be. We think, it does not matter if you play it on PC, PS4 or the Xbox-One, it is a game you have to have it in your collection. Great job Machine Games, GREAT JOB AND THANK YOU FOR THIS FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE.
