Detroit: Become Human Review

Finally! The game that is actually a movie, the movie that is actually a interactive game been released. Detroit: Become Human is the new baby of the developers of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls called Quantic Dream. This time they kidnap us into the futuristic Detroit in the year 2038. The technology is very well developed, but there are still preconceptions, open hostilities and violences against some differences. But the hate in this PS4-exclusive-title is not against homosexuals or migrants. Many people hating androids. The richer and better living population enjoying the help of the machines. They benefit of the technological dolls made in cyber-factories. But on the other hand, many people losing their jobs and blame the androids for that. We take over the controle alternately of three androids named Markus, Connor and Kara can see the state of society from their point of view. In addition, we influence with our actions if the system will stay as known.

.

.

It would be very boring if we had to do a lot of household tasks. But that is the first things we have to do. But we are not playing just ordinary androids. Kara and Markus are so called deviants. That means, they develop their own awareness and start to feel human emotions. Kara tries to protect the small Alice from her violent father. Markus starts to protect himself by acting like a human. Both things are the reason why they are declared by the state as faulty and get chasing by them. Kara tries to protect the child and wants to live in peace. Markus meets more androids and willfully becomes the leader of the deviant-resistance.

.

.

The third playable character is Connor. He is a prototype who is been developed to help in police intervention. He is sent directly by Cyberlife. Together with human partner he is entrusted with the solution of the deviant cases. Everywhere in the USA and especially in Detroit there are increasing numbers of cases in which Androids simply try to flee or even turn against their owners. Why there are so many machines corrupted? And more important: Is it really possible that an android awake into life?

.

Detroit: Become Human changes from time to time the perspective and let us take control of Kara’s and Alice’s flee, Markus’ resistance and Connors investigations. With the actions of all three characters, we determine how the game’s world changes, even if we play them at different places. These action has consequences, even if you can not see them immediately. For example, it could happen that Kara can see in the news what Markus and his group is doing. It can also happen, that there are totally new and different storylines. Or it could happen that a certain solution out of a situation is blocked.

.

.

Sure, Detroit: Become Human has some fixed point that determinante in which direction the story goes. But the way from or / and to this points are different depends who is playing the game. Quantic Dream really does not promise to much. Every deed, action or decision has an impact on the game’s storyline. If For example, Conner’s partner Hank will hardly help him later in the game, if Connor treats him badly. Markus will not win the publicity for his fight for freedom is he just only spread terror and violence.

.

Both examples are very relevant in important scenes and decisions. It could happen that you will decide different and see an end of the game that you did not expect. Detroit: Become Human has definitive a very high replay value than other games in this and other genres because of the many different possibilities players have. Players can see a diagram that shows which way you have choose after the finish of a section. What we like is, that players can choose a chapter in the main menu at any time and start at may points of the section. This gives you the possibility to choose a different way.

.

Fact is that Detroit: Become Human is a interactive thriller than a gameplay based game. That means that the quality of the staging of and the story itself are very important. This game get full points for both. Looking at the Audiovisuel we can confirm, that this game is a role model for other games. The background music, the sounds, the soundtrack, the lights and weather effects as well as the design of the fictional future, all of these are on an outstanding level. Especially the models of the characters are unbelievably well made. All in all, the presentation is so great, that Detroit: Become Human could be a high level Hollywood-Blockbuster-Movie made by Quantic Dreams.

.

The story convinced us, too. This one will not include too much themes compared to Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls. Detroit: Become Human is at a few times really ruthless and does not spare the player. We get some violently scenes to see. We thing, that we will never forget one of the ends we have played. But in two points the game do not let us decide even if we have seen what will happen before. All in all, we had a lot of fun with the story of the three protagonists in this dystopian Detroit. Director David Cage plays with the expectations of the player, sets a few wrong tracks, distributes everywhere small hints in the staked areas to the story or the game world. Additionally he do not try to explain us everything. He even leaves a few things in the dark and promotes thus the interpretation of the player. Yes, he uses some symbolic images directly from the story, for example a separate compartments in the bus for humans and androids. But he do not use often the hammer which makes Detroit: Become Human very great entertaining and exciting interactive thriller.

.

But you are not only watching a movie in which you can decide something from time to time. This game includes a little bit gameplay, too. There are some action scenes which Quantic-Dream included and are typical for such a genre. You have for example to push the button that are shown on the screen. This works great for player that playing the Casual Gamer difficulty level as well as for more experienced players. Players to not have to be scared to stuck in quick-time-events. It can also happen that one of your characters dies.

.

In addition to the QTE it is also possible to move free in limited areas. This is mostly possible if you play as Connor and you are investigating a crime scene. If you are pushing R2 you not only can see your mission goals. You are also able to see point you can interact with something. We had a lot of fun to analyse the crime scenes and to reconstruct the happening. But we wished the movement of our characters would be much better. From time to time you have to walk in millimeters forward to an object to interact with it. Additionally, we wished that the camera-perspective are mostly not very good. That is the reason why players will push the R1 a lot of times to change the view.

.

This is particularly bad, because it’s really worth it to check out the surroundings to get to know things that can help you in the dialogues. We wished, there would be a little bit more variance in the gameplay, too. There are for example no stealth-parts if you play with Markus, but Kara has to flee under pressure. Even in the action parts and chases parts of the game you can decide if you want to take the risky and fast way or if you want to take a slower but also safer way. This is not the best gameplay we have seen so far but totally enough for this kind of genre.

.

We think, that Detroit: Become Human is one of the game that has been developed by Quantic Dream. Yes, there are a few things that we wished could be better. But David Cage gives us such a great atmosphere in a fantastic szenario and a exciting story, that we can quickly forget about this things. We like it how Quantic Dream plays with the good sense of the player. There are a few scenes in which we have been wondered about the feelings we get and scenes we will not forget so quickly. All in all, we can confirm that Detroit: Become Human is a masterpiece in its genre. A wonderful playable movie. Thank you for that great time, Quantic Dream.
