Sega Mega Drive Classics Review

Retro is still in like never before. There are a lot of new games in a 8- or 16-Bit-Design. And do not forget the release of the Mini-NES or –SNES, which was not long ago and the announcement of the Mini Neo Geo. Yes, old classicer are still loved by gamer like 20 years before. And Sega want to play with. This is the reason they released the Mega Drive Classics for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The question is: Have this more than 50 games the still their charm? Let’s find out.

Yes, you have read it right. Sega released with the Mega Drive Classics more than 50 games on one disc. More than 50 classics for the PS4 or XBox One are waiting for you. You can find 16-Bit-Classics like some Sonic-Games, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage or Vectorman. In addition, you can also play some not so well known games Gunstar Heroes, Sword of Vermillion or Crackdown. Unfortunately, on this disc are only Sega-Franchises. That means that you will not find games like The Lion King (or other Disney-Games), Cool Spot, ThunderForce 4, CastleVania or Castle of Illusion. The great looking menu, which is designed in a 90’s look. You can move here through a room for example to choose a game out of the shelf. This game can be put into the virtual Console which is under the TV. It is possible to change also the graphics in the TV. Game-fans will maybe know this already from the PC-Version, which is from time to time available on Steam.

We have to say at this point, that Sega released ten years ago the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and we think that Retro-Fans has this still in mind. Back than they only included Sega games in this pack. If you compare the old collection with the new one you will find 16 differences. 13 of them are games that did not exist like Space Harrier 2, the two ToeJam&Earl-Games, Sword of Vermillion, Landstalker or Revenge of Shinobi.

If you take a look at the Classic-Collections been released in the last month and years, you will quickly notice, that this collections included a lot of additional boni-material. But we asked ourselves, why is there nothing in this Mega Drive Classics. No music, no artworks and especially no covers. We also wished, that the posters you can see in the fictive kids-room would change dynamically for example, depend on which title you played last. We have unfortunately the feeling, that they just ported the known PC version into a one that is playable on the PS4 and XBox One. Yes, they made a great job in developing this collection, but for example, let’s take a look at the the controls. It is not possible to configure the buttons like you would like to. We think that the configurations you can choose from is enough, but if it would be possible to configure them like you want to, this would push the game a huge step away from the PC-Version and give us not the feeling of a port.

What we like is that it is possible to change/modify the look of the classic-filters, scales of pixel or the frame. What we also like is, that they thought about today’s amenities. They changed the difficulty level of some games, so that it is more fun to play them. It is possible to set quick-saves which can be used later. And it is also possible to rewind at critical point to deal with like in the Mega Man Legacy Collection. It could not be much easier. Additionally, if you know the titles very well, you can activate the mirror-mode. That means for example, that Sonic will run from right to the left. We never thought that this mode would be so tough. Great is also that you can play additional and special challenges and alternatively play more than 20 titles against and with other player online.

As fans of the 16-Bit-Era, we could not wait to get this collection. Especially, if you do not know the Steam version of this collection, it is definitely worth to get it. You will be thrown back into the time Nintendo has fight to dominate the console-universe. There are more than 50 great games chosen from a First-Party-Games pool waiting for you, which are not only optimizable in visuals thanks to the pixel-filters. There are also the additional great functions like the rewind- and the quick-save-feature. Yes, there could be some more great titles made by Capcom, Konami etc., but we hope they will be added as as a free DLC in the near feature. We hoped that this version would go into another direction than the PC version. There are unfortunately too many things that reminds us on the PC version. We also wished, there would be much more boni-materials included. But we hope that the developers will release them in the DLCs we talked about. We think, that every “old-games-fan” and especially people, that bought Nintendo’s Mini SNES should get this collection to take a look at the other side of the console-coin that shows other great games than been released at the end of the 80s, at the beginning of the 90s. It is a great collection. Well done SEGA.
