Limbic Entertainment, located in Langen, Germany, is developing Tropico 6.

Before starting Limbic, the three founders were game developers at Sunflowers GmbH, one of Germany’s leading computer game producers. During their time at Sunflowers, Stephan Winter, Eike Radunz and Alexander Frey contributed to titles such as ANNO 1602 – NINA, ANNO 1503 and TechnoMage.

.

Will Tropico 6 follow on from Tropico 5’s storyline?

.

So will it be a fully-fledged sequel, or a reboot?

Tropico 6 will not continue the storyline of Tropico 5. The game will feature a campaign mode across 15 scenarios that will tell 15 unique stories, not connected directly with each other.

Examples of scenarios are:

  • El Presidente wanting to rule the world of sports by abducting an American baseball team.
  • The Intellectuals installing an AI to rule Tropico’s politics based on information obtained by analysing social network data.
  • An alternative timeline in which the Eastern Bloc takes over the world after World War 2 and includes Tropico in their communist collective.
  • A Noir-inspired mission in which El Presidente has to assist the leader of the religious faction in sabotaging the operation of the Axis in Tropico.

.

Players will meet a wide-ranging cast of quirky new characters as well as some returning fan favourites like Penultimo, El Presidente’s loyal advisor, and Sunny Flowers, Tropico’s good conscience for all things regarding Mother Earth.

.

What are the main differences between the older Tropico games and Tropico 6?

For the first time in the series, Tropico 6 will feature not just one huge Island, but archipelagos, consisting of many smaller islands with unique properties, allowing for unique gameplay scenarios.

Boats and bridges connect those many Islands.

Archipelagos bring a new and interesting challenge to the established gameplay formula. Players have to plan their cities and production chains across greater distances and according to the conditions of the different islands.

Also new to the Tropico series are raids.

With the four unique raid buildings, players will be able to send their Tropicans out on raids, which result in various different outcomes, like getting additional resources, technologies, manipulating trading prices, changing diplomacy ratings and preventing the various superpowers from sabotaging Tropico.

There are also specialized raids for multiplayer mode, offering a subtle way to sabotage your rivals.

With the raid buildings, players also have the opportunity to undertake Landmark Heists.

Every heist has a unique narrative plot befitting of Tropico‘s unique tone.

Starting a heist will result in several steps forcing players to make choices:

Possible raids and their outcome:

  • Raid (Resources)
  • Raid (Persons)
  • Intimidating neighboring states and countries
  • Sabotaging Superpowers
  • Provoking rebellions
  • Spying
  • Writing fake reviews for tourism

.

Up to 17 landmarks are waiting to be stolen, including well-known landmarks such as Stonehenge, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.

Landmarks are unique buildings with a strong impact on gameplay. Therefore, we are currently planning that players will only be able to complete one landmark heist per building, so the maximum of landmarks on an island in a standard game is 4.

.

Following four examples of landmarks and their game-impact:

Stonehenge

Around Stonehenge, trees and coconut-palms will grow faster.

.

Hagia Sophi

Tropicans will no longer die because of bad healthcare.

.

Statue of Liberty

Every new immigrant coming to Tropico will be happy, and chances are high that they will vote for El Presidente in the next election.

.

Colosseum

The happiness level of Tropicans can only be influenced by the effects of food and entertainment.

.

Customize your palace – This time around, El Presidente’s (in)famous residence has a modular design, allowing the palace to be customized and even relocated.

10 customizable slots and 6+ variations per slot mean that there are over 1 million unique combinations available to players for them to realize their opulent, despotic vision.

.

Transportation and infrastructure – El Presidente does not like travelling in a llama-cart, so this time Tropico will offer more transport options, such as taxis, buses, aerial cable cars and more. Additionally, there will be more infrastructure options, such as bridges, which will connect the islands, and tunnels that get your Tropicans around, or better through Mountains and Hills.

.

More visual diversityAll residential buildings and many infrastructure buildings have more variations. So for example each residential building will get 3 variations, the player can choose from. Even the famous shacks on Tropico have 3 different iterations.

Tropico will feel more ‘alive’ than ever before, with drunken Tropicans leaving the tavern and many more interactions between Tropicans and buildings.

.

Three difficulty levels for the missions will offer Tropico veterans a challenge, and also allow new players to have an easier start to the game. In sandbox mode, players will have many options with which to change the game as they please. They can determine their starting era, change the starting money, define win conditions and much more.

.

What has stayed the same, and what has changed to make the game better?

  • Tropico 6 will be the most beautiful game in the franchise and will feature a greater range of visual variety, ensuring that everything will always look like the paradise on earth that the Tropican foreign office would have you believe it is…
  • Classic Tropico gameplay: the player fills the role of the (mostly) benevolent dictator El Presidente to rule his/her state with an open heart and an iron first. Make decisions for everything that is going on in Tropico; from crops and wages to big decisions like your immigration policy or your relationships with the major superpowers of the world.
  • Everything in the game is simulated. Tropicans have their own needs, like a craving for entertainment or the hope for a fair wage, which players will need to fulfil in order to win the next election. If things are not looking good, El Presidente can still send certain insubordinate individuals on a long vacation…just to make sure.
  • Tropico 6 will feature a more challenging balancing act for the different factions and superpowers. Juggling the approval of the different political parties will be more nuanced, and getting everyone’s approval is an achievement reserved only for the most skilled and righteous of Presidentes.
  • Tropico 6 will feature more buildings out of the box than any Tropico before: 150+ buildings will give players the tools for every situation and offer a lot of visual variety for players who just want to build a Caribbean paradise. Tropico 6 will also feature new means to improve the infrastructure by building bridges and constructing specialized buildings such as landings, bus depots and aerial cable car stations.
  • Be the dictator you want to be: Players can express themselves by customizing their avatar, their palace and election speeches.

.

Which factions and characters can we expect?

Naturally, El Presidente will be headlining Tropico 6, accompanied by his most trusted subordinate, Penultimo.

Other classic characters are set to return, as well as brand-new characters such as The Broker, who will offer enticing deals and offers to encourage El Presidente to add to or spend his Swiss Bank account money. The table below offers a brief overview of the various Factions and Superpowers and their representing spokespersons, some of which players may recognize from previous Tropico-games:

.

Will there be a physical retail version?

Yes, there will be a retail version of Tropico 6 on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

Tropico 6 uses the latest version of Unreal Engine 4.

.

What will be the system requirements?

Many optimizations have already been made to the game, but the most important hardware tests are still ongoing, so currently this is still TBC.

.

Will the typical and sometimes dark Tropico humour be back?

Yes and with the new writing team, you can also expect fresh and new ideas.

The humour and the music have always been at the core of the Tropico series, and we are taking a lot of care to ensure that Tropico 6 will stay true to the classic Tropico experience, especially in terms of humour.

.

How will the combat system of Tropico 6 work?

We had good experiences with the combat system of Tropico 5. We will use this system as a foundation, on which we will then add improvements.

.

Will Tropico 6 have modding support via Steam Workshops?

Definitely! In addition, this will not be limited to just maps – we want to make almost every aspect of Tropico 6 moddable with the Unreal 4 Development Kit (UDK).

.

Will Tropico 6 have rebels and therefore protests and rebellions?

Yes, there will be rebels, riots and even faction and superpower escalations!

When a player has a bad reputation with an important faction, this can lead to serious problems.

  • Faction escalations happen, if one or more factions do not agree with El Presidentes actions. For example, the intellectuals can hack into the Swiss bank account of El Presidente and freeze his/her funds.
  • Superpower escalations can lead to an embargo, which can result in a block on trade for important goods.

.

Will it be possible to play as a vicious dictator, without elections?

Yes. You are El Presidente – you can do as you wish! However, how long can you stay in office when acting this way? Then there are military coups and the escalation of foreign superpowers to consider. El Presidente loves his office, and you will have to help him keep it.

.

Will there be a population cap?

The game is currently in development and in the process of optimization. Therefore, it is hard to give specific details regarding this, yet.

Nevertheless, there will be a limit in the game because of the technical limitations of different platforms and their architectures.

.

Will Tropico 6 feature cross-platform multiplayer support?

No. Players must be on the same platform network to play together, i.e. on console, Xbox Live players cannot play with PlayStation Network and/or PC players, and vice versa.

This is due to a variety of reasons, but the main one is the different architectures of the different platforms.
